After the Battle: Revising Vow of the Forsaken

Every battle leaves a silence. In the Vale, that silence has teeth.

I am revising Vow of the Forsaken, and I keep returning to the hours after danger passes. The wound is dressed. The door is shut. There may even be a moment to breathe. Then someone asks an ordinary question, and the answer is suddenly the hardest thing in the room.

A rescue can change where a person stands. It cannot tell them whose hand to accept or what to do with the fear that followed them out. I want those choices to live on the page. Gareth and Tamlin have spent too long learning how to survive each other’s absence. When they are together, a small kindness can feel perilous. Silence can carry an accusation neither is ready to speak aloud.

In revision, I listen for the places where a scene moves on before its consequences do. A fight should leave more than a mark on the body. The Vale’s old magic may answer a vow, but it cannot make trust arrive on command. Sometimes the true turn comes later, in a corridor or at a campfire, when no one is watching and a person could still choose to walk away.

This is the part of dark fantasy romance I love most: the grand danger makes space for a private reckoning. A blade can force a choice in an instant. Living with that choice asks for another kind of courage. Gareth and Tamlin deserve room for both.

Vow of the Forsaken is still taking shape, so I am holding its secrets close. For now, I can tell you what I am trying to protect as I work: the weight of what came before, the slow heat of what might come next, and the moments when these two let the truth stay in the room with them.

If you are waiting for Gareth and Tamlin, you can read my earlier glimpse of Vow of the Forsaken. If you have yet to enter the Vale, begin with Thorns of Ash.
